March 2020
I could have sworn it was January a couple of weeks ago! But here we are, in March!!
One of the great things about March is that the weather starts behaving a little better. We have Corona Virus and various hurricanes lashing the shores of the UK to deal with but that shouldn't stop our groove, right? So, if you are brave enough to venture out this March, here are our best bits:
African Solutions, Global Challenges: The role of the diaspora
4th March
SOAS university hosts a number of guests from across the African continent to discuss some of the pertinent issues facing the continent.
This is a short TEDTalk style presentation featuring speakers who narrate how they have been able to navigate finding African solutions to global challenges in the diaspora. This is a broad collaboration with a number of institutions: SOAS, The Royal African Society, AFFORD, The IE Africa Centre and MIT Legatum Centre for Development and Entrepreneurship.
Africa Talks: The Global Legacy of African Woman Writers
7th March
With growing interest in African literature, Africa Talks aims to explore the world of literature through the eyes of African female writers, examining the role of gender, class and race. Editor of 'The New Daughters of Africa' Margaret Busby, is joined by Sarah Ladipo Manyinka and Angela Wachuka:
Addressing African literature’s rich cultural history across centuries and continents, the event will explore sisterhood, feminist movements, political and academic thought and the ways African women have taken ownership of these spaces through memory and storytelling.
The talk is part of the LSE Festival taking place from the 2nd - 7th March.
Oxford Africa
12-14th March
Now I know Oxford isn't exactly round the corner from London but the reputation of the Oxford Africa Summit precedes itself. Previous guests have included prominent African leaders such as Ghanaian president Nana Akufo-Addo, Philanthropist and Sudanese entrepreneur Mo Ibrahim. Switching up the line-up for the new year, Senegalese-American musician Akon.
We have had to revise the events for March due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Several events have either been postponed til later in the year - some even cancelled. We will keep you updated on any changes.
Stay safe and enjoy your March.
